Tybee Island, GA - Fatal Multi-Car Crash on Hwy 80

Tybee Island, GA (June 9, 2025) – On June 7, a serious multi-vehicle crash on the only roadway connecting Tybee Island to the mainland brought beachbound travel to a halt for several hours, according to local officials.

The wreck occurred on Highway 80 near Fort Pulaski Road, significantly impacting traffic flow to and from the island. While the collision took place outside of Tybee Island’s jurisdiction, police there said the incident caused major disruptions. Emergency crews responded quickly, and Tybee police worked to support efforts to safely reopen the roadway.

Photos from the scene showed one vehicle overturned and another badly damaged, with a third car also involved. Chatham County fire officials confirmed that six people were transported to the hospital with injuries. Tragically, police later announced that one of the drivers involved in the crash had died.

The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation. For hours, authorities urged drivers to steer clear of the area. Chatham County Police eventually confirmed that all lanes of Highway 80 were reopened, restoring access to the island.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased victim.

Georgia Car Accidents

Tybee Island, GA - Fatal Multi-Car Crash on Hwy 80Each year, thousands of lives are forever changed by fatal car accidents on Georgia’s roadways. With more than 1,500 traffic deaths reported annually, these tragic incidents leave behind grieving families, emotional devastation, and lasting financial hardship. High-speed collisions, impaired driving, and distracted motorists are among the top causes of deadly crashes in the state, many of which could have been prevented.

In Georgia, fatal accidents often occur on major highways, rural roads, and even neighborhood streets. Whether it’s a multi-vehicle pileup or a single-car crash, the consequences are devastating. Families are left to cope not only with emotional loss, but also with unexpected expenses like funeral costs, lost household income, and ongoing financial instability.

The Georgia Department of Transportation and national safety agencies consistently point to several leading causes behind these fatal crashes:

  • Speeding and reckless driving
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Distracted driving, including texting or using a phone
  • Fatigue, particularly during nighttime hours
  • Failure to yield or obey traffic signals

When a loved one is lost in a crash caused by another driver’s negligence, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. These legal actions can provide compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, future earnings, and more. However, navigating the legal system during such a painful time can be overwhelming.
