Atlanta, GA - Fatal Hit-and-Run on Peachtree St near Baker St

Atlanta, GA (May 20, 2025)  — A hit-and-run collision claimed the life of a 71-year-old man early Sunday morning, May 18, in the heart of downtown Atlanta’s hotel district.

Authorities say officers were called to the intersection of Peachtree Street NW and Baker Street NW at approximately 6:44 a.m. following reports of a pedestrian being struck. When first responders arrived, they discovered the man unresponsive in the crosswalk. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary findings suggest the man had been lawfully crossing the street when a black sedan hit him and fled without stopping.

The Atlanta Police Department’s Accident Investigations Unit is actively reviewing the case and searching for the driver involved. The investigation remains ongoing.

We want to offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

Atlanta Car Accidents

Atlanta, GA - Fatal Hit-and-Run on Peachtree St near Baker StEach year, Georgia sees a staggering number of motor vehicle crashes—over 300,000. These accidents lead to more than 150,000 injuries and claim thousands of lives. What’s especially tragic is that so many of these crashes could have been avoided. Negligent driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal and serious accidents, both in Georgia and nationwide.

In fact, research shows that more than 94% of traffic collisions across the U.S. stem from driver error. Some of the most common forms of negligence behind the wheel include:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Texting or other forms of distracted driving
  • Drowsy or fatigued driving
  • Speeding or reckless driving

The numbers are alarming: in a single year, speeding was responsible for over 12,000 deaths across the country, while distracted driving contributed to more than 400,000 crashes. These types of behaviors often lead to catastrophic outcomes, especially for passengers, pedestrians, and other unsuspecting drivers.

For those injured by a negligent driver, the physical and emotional toll is often matched by financial stress. Medical bills, lost income, and long-term care needs can be overwhelming. That’s why having an experienced personal injury attorney by your side is critical to securing the compensation you need to heal and move forward.

But for families who have lost a loved one due to someone else’s careless actions, the pain runs even deeper. If your family is facing such a loss, know that you don’t have to carry the financial burden alone. A knowledgeable wrongful death attorney in Atlanta can help you pursue justice by filing a claim to recover funeral expenses and other damages while holding the responsible party accountable.
