Candler Co., GA (May 30, 2025) – Authorities in Candler County have closed a stretch of Interstate 16 westbound following a serious multi-vehicle collision near milepost 101. The crash, which occurred between 9 and 9:30 a.m. on May 30, involved at least two fully loaded tractor-trailers and resulted in one confirmed fatality.
Due to the severity of the wreck, all westbound traffic is being detoured off I-16 onto Excelsior Church Road, then redirected to Highways 46 and 57. Officials are urging drivers to remain cautious and patient as emergency responders work the scene.
“This is an active and complex situation,” the Candler County Sheriff’s Office shared in a social media update. “Please stay alert, follow detour signs, and give emergency crews the space they need to operate safely.”
Cleanup and investigation efforts are expected to keep the roadway closed for several more hours. The Georgia Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Georgia Car Accidents
Each year, Candler County and the broader region of Southeast Georgia see a troubling number of traffic collisions involving large commercial trucks. These crashes are among the most devastating on our roads, often resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities. While semi-trucks are essential to the economy, their massive size and weight—up to 40 tons when fully loaded—can turn a moment of negligence into a fatal tragedy.
Georgia consistently ranks among the most dangerous states for large truck accidents, and Candler County is not immune. From rural highways to busy interstates like I-16, these collisions frequently involve passenger vehicles and often have deadly consequences.
Nationwide data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) paints a stark picture:
- Over 500,000 large truck crashes are reported across the U.S. each year.
- Nearly 5,000 of those crashes result in fatalities.
- The vast majority of fatal crashes involving semis occur on rural roads and highways—much like those found in Candler County.
Driver negligence remains the leading cause. Common factors contributing to these tragic accidents include:
- Fatigue from long hours behind the wheel
- Distracted driving and failure to observe surroundings
- Speeding or reckless lane changes
- Improper truck maintenance or overloaded cargo
- Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
When a semi-truck collides with a smaller vehicle, the people in the passenger car almost always suffer the worst. Survivors may face long-term disabilities, mounting medical bills, and the emotional trauma of losing a loved one—all through no fault of their own.
