Thomson, GA – Two Vehicle Crash on I-20 Causes Major Delays and Sends Driver to Hospital

One Injured in Two-Car Crash at DeRenne Ave and Bull St

Thomson, GA (October 20, 2025) – A serious car accident caused hours-long delays on Interstate 20 westbound in Thomson on October 17, leaving one driver injured and backing up traffic for several miles.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the collision occurred around 6:20 p.m. at mile marker 175, near SR 150/Cobbham Rd. Officials reported that a sedan was traveling too closely behind a tractor-trailer in the right lane when it struck the rear end of the truck. The impact caused significant front-end damage to the sedan and disrupted traffic flow along the busy highway.

Emergency personnel and troopers responded to the scene to assist the injured and manage traffic. The driver of the sedan sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Doctors Hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.

All westbound lanes of I-20 were temporarily shut down as crews cleared debris and investigated the cause of the crash. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, traffic congestion extended as far back as mile marker 180 during the closure. After approximately two hours, authorities reopened the lanes to restore the normal flow of vehicles.

Investigators have not yet confirmed whether speed or distracted driving played a role in the collision, but they continue to examine evidence and gather witness statements to determine contributing factors.

We wish the victim and everyone involved a speedy recovery.

Understanding Rear-End Collisions in Georgia

Two Vehicle Crash on I-20 Causes Major Delays and Sends Driver to Hospital

Rear-end collisions are among the most common types of vehicle accidents on Georgia roadways, particularly on high-speed routes like I-20, I-285, and I-75. These crashes often occur due to following too closely, distracted driving, or sudden stops in congested traffic conditions. Even when traveling at moderate speeds, rear-end impacts can cause serious injuries such as whiplash, concussions, and back or spinal cord injuries.

In this Thomson crash, the sedan’s close following distance behind the tractor-trailer was cited as a contributing factor. Drivers are reminded to maintain a safe distance, especially when traveling behind large commercial trucks that require longer stopping distances and have limited visibility directly behind them.

Victims of rear-end or multi-vehicle accidents often face unexpected medical costs, vehicle repair expenses, and time away from work. When these crashes are caused by another driver’s negligence, injured parties have the right to pursue financial compensation.
