Liberty County, GA (January 26, 2026) – A 20-year-old woman was killed and another person was injured in a head-on crash early on January 25 on Highway 84 near Liberty County High School, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Troopers responded to the scene shortly after 6:00 a.m. on Sunday. A 2016 Honda Civic, driven by Kortney Jackson of Allenhurst, was reportedly traveling west in the eastbound lane of Highway 84 when it collided head-on with a 2025 Genesis GV70. Witnesses at the scene provided details to troopers indicating the Civic was going the wrong way before the crash occurred.
Jackson was transported to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville, where she was later pronounced dead. The male driver of the Genesis sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. His condition has not been publicly released.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Kortney Jackson. We also send our sincere wishes for a swift and complete recovery to the driver who was injured.
Why Wrong-Way Crashes in Liberty County Can Be Fatal
Wrong-way collisions are some of the most severe types of accidents on the road. These incidents often happen at high speeds and give drivers little or no time to react.
On highways like GA-84—especially during early morning hours when visibility is low—drivers can become confused or disoriented and accidentally enter the wrong lane. Missed signage or unfamiliar roads can also contribute to these tragic mistakes.
When two vehicles collide head-on, the outcome is often catastrophic. The force of the impact can lead to traumatic injuries such as head trauma, spinal damage, chest injuries, or broken bones. Victims may require extensive medical care, surgeries, and long-term rehabilitation.
Unfortunately, wrong-way crashes also have a high rate of fatality, especially when higher speeds are involved. In many cases, one or more passengers or drivers do not survive.
Legal guidance can make a difference for crash survivors and families. A wrongful death lawyer can help review traffic reports, gather witness accounts, and evaluate whether road design, signage, or driver impairment may have played a role.
In fatal crashes, attorneys may assist bereaved family members in exploring what types of compensation may be available for funeral expenses, medical costs, or other losses.
