Laurens County, GA (January 24, 2026) – A series of truck crashes along Interstate 16 left one person dead and two others critically injured on Friday, January 23, in Laurens County. The collisions occurred around 11:46 a.m. near mile marker 32 in Central Georgia, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Troopers said three semitrucks and a pickup hauling a utility trailer were involved in the crashes. Near mile marker 32, a Kenworth tractor-trailer hit a Freightliner box truck. The impact pushed the Freightliner into another Freightliner, which then collided with a Chevrolet pickup towing a trailer.
The Kenworth overturned off the highway. Two other trucks in nearby crashes also overturned or struck the median cables, scattering debris across the roadway.
Emergency crews from several counties arrived quickly to help. Paramedics treated the injured at the scene before taking two victims to nearby hospitals in critical condition. The Bleckley County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that one person died from their injuries at Atrium Health Navicent.
Responders spent several hours clearing the damaged trucks and trailers from I-16. Traffic backed up for miles near Allentown, Montrose, and Dudley, causing long delays. Officials said the congestion caused several secondary crashes in Laurens and Bleckley Counties before the road was reopened.
Investigators collected evidence and interviewed witnesses to determine how the crashes began. The Georgia State Patrol continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
We extend our condolences to the family of the victim who lost their life. We also wish the injured victims a full and steady recovery.
Compensation for Victims’ Families After a Fatal Truck Accident in Georgia?
When a fatal truck accident occurs, families may pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. These claims help address both financial burdens and emotional losses that follow the sudden death of a loved one. Georgia law allows families to seek damages that reflect the full value of the life lost.
Funeral and burial expenses are among the first costs families face. These unexpected expenses can create financial strain, especially after a sudden loss. A wrongful death claim can help recover funds to cover funeral services, burial arrangements, and related costs.
Medical expenses may also be included if the victim received emergency care before passing. Hospital treatment, ambulance transport, and other medical bills connected to the crash can be part of the claim.
Lost income is another key area of compensation. Families can seek recovery for the wages, benefits, and financial support their loved one would have provided in the future. This recovery helps maintain financial stability and ease long-term hardships.
Georgia law also allows recovery for non-economic damages that reflect the personal side of loss. Compensation may cover the companionship, support, and guidance the deceased shared with their family. These damages recognize the lasting emotional impact of the tragedy.
Liability in truck accidents may extend beyond the driver. Trucking companies can also be held responsible for unsafe practices, poor maintenance, or failure to follow safety regulations. Identifying all responsible parties requires reviewing driver logs, inspection records, and company policies.
Because truck accident cases often involve several vehicles and insurance companies, it’s important to work with a wrongful death lawyer. An attorney can handle insurance discussions, gather evidence, and explain what options may be available for compensation. Legal guidance helps families make informed decisions while focusing on recovery.
