DeKalb County, GA (February 1, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash on Saturday, January 31, killed one man and left two others injured at Covington Highway and Glenwood Road in DeKalb County.
Emergency crews arrived around 1:30 p.m. after reports of a major crash involving multiple vehicles. Investigators said the chain reaction began when a driver pulled out of a driveway and struck an SUV. The impact caused the SUV to overturn and crash into a third vehicle.
Officials confirmed that the SUV driver died from his injuries at the scene. Paramedics transported two other people to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Police officers blocked the intersection and directed traffic while crews cleared debris and removed the damaged vehicles. Investigators spent several hours documenting the scene and interviewing witnesses.
The DeKalb County Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the deadly collision.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the man who lost his life. We also wish the injured victims a full and steady recovery.
Compensation For Families After a Fatal Accident in Georgia
Families in Georgia may seek compensation for lost income and financial support. This includes the wages, raises, and benefits the deceased would have earned over their lifetime. These damages help replace the financial stability they once provided.
Medical and funeral expenses can also be recovered through the estate. These may include emergency care, hospital bills, and burial or cremation costs. They are classified as economic losses, separate from the family’s emotional damages.
Loved ones can pursue damages for loss of companionship. This includes the guidance, affection, and emotional support once given by the deceased. These non-economic damages reflect the lasting void created by their absence.
If the victim experienced pain or distress before death, the estate may recover damages for that suffering. These damages cover only what the deceased endured before passing, not the grief or emotional loss suffered by surviving relatives
In cases involving reckless or intentional behavior, courts may award punitive damages. These are meant to punish egregious misconduct and discourage similar acts in the future.
Insurance companies often make quick settlement offers after a fatal accident. These early offers rarely reflect the full financial and emotional toll on a family. Accepting them too soon can prevent recovery of the full value of the claim.
A wrongful death lawyer can review financial documents, medical records, and expert evaluations to calculate fair compensation. Legal representation helps families navigate insurance negotiations and secure the justice they deserve.
