Atlanta, GA (January 18, 2026) – A three-vehicle crash on Saturday morning, January 17, killed one person and left two others injured on Interstate 285 West near Old National Highway in Atlanta.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, a Honda Accord was heading west when it hit a tractor-trailer. The impact caused the Accord to leave the roadway and strike an abandoned vehicle parked on the shoulder.
Emergency units arrived shortly after 8:00 a.m. and found several people hurt inside the Honda. A passenger in the Accord died from their injuries at the scene. Paramedics rushed the driver and another occupant to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers assisted troopers in securing the crash site and directing traffic. Investigators examined vehicle debris and documented skid marks as part of the initial review.
The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team joined the investigation to determine how the crash occurred. Authorities have not confirmed whether any citations will be issued. The investigation remains ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim. Our hearts are also with those injured, and we wish them a full and swift recovery.
Who Can File a Wrongful Death Claim After a Deadly Car Crash in Georgia?
After a fatal crash in Georgia, the right to file a claim first goes to the victim’s spouse. If there is no spouse, the children may file. If no immediate family is available, the victim’s parents or the estate’s representative may bring the claim on behalf of eligible relatives.
A wrongful death claim helps families recover the value of their loved one’s life. It may include lost income, companionship, and other contributions the person would have provided.
The estate can also file a separate claim to cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and more.
Families must act within Georgia’s legal deadline, which is usually two years from the date of death. Starting early gives time to collect records, witness statements, and other evidence needed for the claim.
Determining who is at fault can be complex, especially in multi-vehicle crashes. One or more drivers or even a company responsible for a vehicle may share liability. A wrongful death lawyer can review reports, photos, and crash data to help identify all responsible parties.
Insurance companies may contact families soon after a fatal crash. Initial settlement offers are often lower than the case’s full value. Speaking with an attorney before signing any agreement helps ensure the decision is informed and fair.
