DeKalb County, GA (July 2, 2025) – A serious multi-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning caused major delays on I-285 westbound in DeKalb County, leaving traffic at a standstill for several hours.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) reported that the incident occurred around 4:45 a.m. near Bouldercrest Road, when a five-car collision—including a semi-truck—prompted a full shutdown of all westbound lanes.
Authorities say the semi-truck struck a barrier wall, causing it to spill diesel fuel across the roadway. Emergency crews rushed to the scene to manage the fuel cleanup and assess the damage to the wall. Additional minor collisions occurred in the congestion that followed the initial wreck.
Injuries were reported, though officials have not yet released details on the number of people hurt or the severity of their injuries.
Traffic lanes were gradually reopened several hours later as crews completed repairs and cleared the scene. Drivers were urged to seek alternate routes during the closure.
This is a developing story. Stay with local outlets for the latest updates. Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.
Georgia Car Accidents
Across Georgia—from rural highways to congested stretches of I-75, I-20, and I-16—serious car accidents involving semi-trucks and multi-vehicle pile-ups continue to claim lives and change them forever. These large-scale collisions are among the most dangerous on the road, often resulting in life-altering injuries, extensive vehicle damage, and, in the worst cases, tragic fatalities.
Heavy commercial trucks, which can weigh up to 80,000 pounds when fully loaded, pose a significant risk in a collision, especially when multiple vehicles are involved. Even a single act of negligence behind the wheel can spark a chain-reaction crash that affects numerous drivers in a matter of seconds.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), more than half a million large truck crashes occur annually across the U.S., with thousands leading to fatal outcomes. Georgia consistently ranks among the top states for truck-related accidents, many of which occur on high-speed interstates and rural roads common throughout the state.
Multi-vehicle pile-ups involving trucks often happen in dense traffic, during inclement weather, or when drivers are caught off guard by sudden stops or poor visibility. These collisions can quickly escalate, trapping drivers and passengers in a dangerous tangle of wreckage that requires immediate emergency response.
Common causes behind truck and pile-up crashes in Georgia include:
- Distracted or fatigued driving
- Speeding in heavy traffic or poor conditions
- Following too closely, especially in bad weather
- Equipment failure or lack of vehicle maintenance
- Impaired driving involving alcohol or drugs
Unfortunately, in accidents involving large trucks, it’s the occupants of passenger vehicles who often bear the brunt of the damage. Survivors may suffer spinal injuries, traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, or long-term emotional trauma.
